MANY cities, towns and villages, across the area will be celebrating after the latest prizes for the East Midlands in Bloom awards were announced today.

Skegness managed to gain a silver in the coastal resort category with a Judges Award for the Sea View Walk area.

Residents are also thrilled in Burgh Le Marsh after it was awarded a Certificate of Achievement with a Judges Award for The new Bloom Committee in the large village category.

Councillor Tony Bridges, Portfolio Holder for the Environment, said: “The East Midlands In Bloom Awards are a chance for the community to come together, in some cases working with the district council, to improve their local area through great planting schemes. On behalf of the council, I’d like to congratulate all those who have been successful and in doing so made East Lindsey a bright and vibrant place to both live and visit.”

The results were revealed at The Springfields Festival Gardens, Spalding this afternoon and all of the entries were judged during July on horticultural expertise, the maintenance of the local environment and the involvement of all sectors of the local community.

Jeff Bates, Chair of East Midlands in Bloom says: “This year the grey skies and prolonged periods of heavy rain caused a number of problems to Bloom groups. Regardless of the weather, high standards were still maintained and there were lots of excellent examples showing communities working together to bring long lasting improvements to their area.”

The haul of awards this year includes 12 Gold, 17 Silver, 15 Silver Gilt, 9 Bronze and two Certificates of Achievement.

Special Awards are also presented to communities to highlight outstanding achievements in cleanliness, conservation, horticultural excellence, the best front garden, best school garden and business premise.

The competition is organised by volunteers and various categories are sponsored by East Midlands based businesses that provide support the competition. Already a number of new communities have already shown keen interest in the 2013 competition as we continue to grow across our region.

East Midlands in Bloom also seeks to encourage school children of all ages to take an active interest in their local environment by promoting a painting and a digital photography competition.
