A TALENTED piano playing protégé entertained some of the most important guests in the country when he was invited to 10 Downing Street recently.

Fourteen-year-old Alex Wilson from Burgh le Marsh performed during a reception at the top London address as part of a Future Talent event, and he wowed guests for over an hour with a repertoire of jazz.

The event was attended by Katharine The Duchess of Kent, Rt Hon George Osborne MP, Rt Hon Michael Gove, Lord Howard of Lympne and Rt Hon David Blunkett, among others on September 13.

Through the Future Talent initiative Alex was also invited to the Queen’s Jubilee Concert at Buckingham Palace earlier in the year.

“He was thrilled to have met Alfie Boe and Madness and was very lucky to have his photograph taken with them,” said Tania Wilson, Alex’s mother.

Alex holds a number of achievements under his belt, including representing the Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM) at the Beethoven Competition and winning the RNCM Ian McPherson Prize.

And in March this year, Alex was honoured to represent the RNCM in the Intercollegiate Beethoven Competition at the Austrian Cultural Forum in London.

Each year specialist music schools from around the country are invited to enter one pianist to represent their college and Alex was delighted to have been selected.

“In July last year, Alex was invited by Future Talent to perform at the prestigious Ryedale Festival, where he played pieces by Brahms and Chopin and in addition a jazz piece arranged by himself,” added Tania.

“And last year Alex was presented the Junior Royal Northern College of Music Ian McPherson Prize which is awarded to an outstanding student age 12-14. He was also noted for his academic achievements by the college,” explained Tania.

Not only is Alex a talented musician but his studies are also advanced for his age - he began several of his GCSEs a year early and completed an AS Level and Extended Project Qualification three years early and was delighted to have gained an A.
