Dodd honoured for years of joy
A SKEGNESS councillor has presented a true comedy legend with a token of the town’s appreciation after decades of dedicated family entertainment.
Coun Robin Hunter-Clarke gave the Squire of Knotty Ash himself, Ken Dodd, a few Skegness memorabilia gifts when the comic performed in the town last week.
The 84-year-old shows no signs of slowing and put in a collosal six-hours on stage on the night.
So Coun Hunter-Clarke gave the gifts as a small thank you for all the happiness he has brought people - and Skegness in particular.
“He has been in show business 58 years and has been performing here for decades,” said Robin. “Surely he deserves appreciation for that.
“Ken joked he loves coming to Skegness ‘to have his teeth fixed’ because ‘Skegness is SO Bracing’
“He told me that as long as he was able to he would continue doing what he loved - performing to live audiences and making people laugh.
“We chatted about all sorts and then he presented me with one of his tickling sticks which had apparently just been ‘refluffed’.
“Ken is a living legend and at 84 years of age is still packing theatres up and down the country.
“The Embassy Theatre was full and you could sense the excitement of the 1,200 people eager for him to appear.
“At 7pm curtains went up and after almost six hours of performing the audience still wanted more. I was well and truly ‘discomknockerated’ after the show and everyone was all smiles as they left to return home. Ken truly is the last of the great comics.”
