Local couple Mary and Norman Baron celebrated their Diamond wedding on Thursday, March 6.

Mary recalled: “We met at the Derbyshire Miners holiday camp in 1953. We did the last Waltz together and had our first date the following Sunday.

“We were to have met again the following Saturday, but I was stranded in the 1953 floods.”

She continued: “We now have four wonderful children, all of them married to our much loved son’s and daugher’s-in-law.

“We have seven loving grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.”

The couple lived in Hogsthorpe until 1968, when they emigrated to Australia for five years.

Norman worked on sky-scrapers as a plumber and Mary worked in make-up for Revlon, Clinique and Australia’s equivalent of Harrods, ‘David Jones’.

Mrs Baron continued: “Norman started his own plumbing business on our return and I worked for Hudson’s local make-up beautique for the next twenty years, returning to Australia every two years.

“On our 60th anniversary, we had a very unexpected visit from our ‘Australian’ family.

“We all celebrated at the Windmill, Burgh Le Marsh and after at our son’s home for afternoon tea. Family came up from Southampton for the weekend, too.”
