Dedicated women secure huge grant
GFS Platforms, Saxy Avenue, Skegness.
The drive and dedication of a group of women who have battled adversity in life has helped to secure a grant to help fund training at a charity.
Volunteer member, Amy Moss of Winthorpe who attends GFS Platform (The Girls’ Friendly Society) branch in Saxby Avenue, felt she had gained so much from the support of the charity that she wanted to see how she could influence and improve the lives of other young woman - and in doing so secured a £930 grant.
“I spoke to councillor Carl Macey who then suggested I speak to Coun Dick Edginton about my ideas for the charity and he really got on board with what we are trying to do here and our training ambitions,” said Amy.
Amy then liaised with member and friend, Lena Woodward of Chapel St Leonards, as well as the rest of the team and Lena’s niece Ceejay Fitzpatrick, about what courses the money could be best used for.
Initially, the women have decided that cooking, equipment, basic first aid training, and health and safety courses would be the way forward.
“We wanted to give other woman a chance to gain new qualifications to help them learn new skills and acquire opportunities in the workplace,” said Lena Woodward.
The group will be obtaining more kitchen equipment to further enhance its already popular and successful cookery sessions, which enables members to learn a new skill and then enjoy it with family.
And in September, the group will be creating a Grand GFS Bake Off session and taking their culinary delights to a GFS Celebration Event uniting many of the country’s centres.
The grant was made possible through East Lindsey District Council’s councillors’ community grant scheme, Coun Dick Edginton said he thought GFS was a worthwhile organisation doing a lot of positive things for young women. To find out more call GFS on 01754 612424.
