A dog walker on the South Parade area of the beach called police about 8am yesterday to report a body.

Police attended the scene and last night said they believed they knew who the man is and were in the process of tracing relatives.

Earlier in the day reports on social media spoke of a loyal pet - a Staffordshire Bull Terrier type dog - who stayed by the body until emergency services arrived.

Debbie Sutton said: “Oh no poor dog x” and Julie Sadler said: “Terrible news, loyal to the end..how sad.”

Police say they would value any information from anyone who thinks they may have seen the man between about 7pm on Friday evening and earlier Saturday morning prior to his body being found.

The man is described as being aged in his 50’s with receding light brown hair and blue eyes. He was wearing walking boots, cream jeans and a hooded jumper and a Ferrari baseball cap.

Although the death is unexplained, police do not believe there are any suspicious circumstances. A post mortem will be carried out next week to establish a cause of death.

In the meantime, anyone who believes they may have seen the man can call 101, quoting incident number 76 of February 13.
