Dairy farm visit for pupils
PUPILS from Richmond Primary School in Skegness learned what life might be like on a real diary farm when they visited Rich Pastures in Thorpe St Peter on World School Milk Day on Wednesday.
Guided by dairy farmers David and Helen Banham, the class of 30 primary school children met the 160-strong herd of milking cows and calves, seeing first-hand how milk is made and just how the cows are cared for each day.
In its 12th year, World School Milk Day is organised annually by the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations and celebrates school milk across the world.
In Britain it is supported by organisations including DairyCo, dairy farming’s information and research body, which aims to tell the story of dairy farming to school children and the general public.
Helen said: “We jumped at the chance to invite local schools onto the farm for World School Milk Day. Kids are so inquisitive - it’s fantastic to see how interested they are in the animals, the milking parlour and just how milk gets from our fields to their fridge in school or at home.”
Diane Symes, Schools and Education Manager from DairyCo, said: “Great food comes from great farming, and understanding where our food comes from is such an important lesson. Many children rarely get the chance to see for themselves how milk is produced, so it’s great that farmers and schools alike are celebrating World School Milk Day in this way.”
