It was a proud day for 100 year old Gladys Waite and her family last week when she received a community award from the Mayor of Burgh, Coun Alan Middleton, who was accompanied by the Mayoress Joan Middleton.

Gladys, who lived in Burgh for much of her life, has been heavily involved in community activities.

A founder member of both the OAP Association and the Evergreens, she had also been a long-serving member of the Burgh WI and for many years had produced and directed the annual WI pantomime.

A gifted pianist, Gladys played the piano at the Methodist church and for the WI meetings for many years and also taught piano.

She excelled at needlecraft and at one time ran a crochet and knitting group.

She now resides at Westcotes Care Home in Skegness; but regularly returns to Burgh to attend various activities.

In February this year, she celebrated her 100th birthday with a party in the WI Hall.

In March she attended the Alford Silver Band concert in the Village Hall at which her son Alan was one of the musicians. During the evening she recited one of the many poems that she has written over the years.

It was appropriate that the presentation was made at the Friday Luncheon Club, which Gladys attended for many years. She was joined by her family as she made an acceptance speech. A remarkable lady who is very deserving of the award.
