Boxing legend at charity evening
Mayor of Skegness Coun Mark Anderson, Frank Bruno and Addlethorpe Golf Club manager Chris Reynolds.
BOXING legend and national treasure Frank Bruno regaled dinner guests at a celebrity evening and charity fund raiser hosted by Addlethorpe Golf Course last week.
Bruno, appearing for the first time since his televised Piers Morgan interview, gave an honest and revealing insight into his heavyweight boxing career and much documented personal life.
Answering questions from the crowd, he reminisced about growing up in London and his early days in boxing, interspersed with humorous anecdotes and his trademark booming laugh.
“If you’ve got a dream in your head, you can never give up that dream,” he said.
“I wanted to be a world champion, I never had a trade and all I wanted to be was a boxer, so when the opportunity came up I went in there to give it all I had.”
After his recent battle with mental health issues, Bruno seemed happy and contented with life, thanks to a careful regime and new girlfriend.
“It’s not easy when someone says you’ve got bi-polar - it’s a terrible thing,” he said.
“You get highs and lows and recently my ex got me sectioned again.
“Now I’m getting everything right and these last few months have been wicked, just taking it day by day.
“I’m eating less red meat, more fish and minerals and I’ve got a nice girl who looks after me.”
The event also featured an auction of sporting memorabilia followed by a charity auction raising funds for the Mayor of Skegness Coun Mark Anderson’s chosen charity, the Butterfly Hospice.
The evening also marked a new step for Addlethorpe Gold Course and its new general manager Chris Reynolds who hopes to make celebrity evenings a regular fixture.
“It’s an absolute pleasure to welcome Frank Bruno to Addlethorpe Golf Course and a real privilege,” he said.
“Every six weeks there’s going to be a celebrity appearing from footballers, golfers and rugby stars - we are going to do the whole lot.”
