Benefits as lifestyle a ‘major’ Skeg issue
BENEFIT claimants who rely on the state as a ‘lifestyle choice’ are a ‘major issue’ in Skegness, the town’s MP has argued.
Mark Simmonds told business representatives and councillors at a recent meeting that half of the letters he received from his constituents were benefits claimants worried they were going to have their payments withdrawn.
Speaking at the North Shore Hotel, he said: “If you are genuinely disabled, you have nothing to be afraid of but many people have been self assessing for years and have their complete lifestyle paid for by the state when they are fit and healthy.”
Mr Simmonds said he was therefore supportive of Ian Duncan Smith’s universal credit system intended to make benefits ‘less complicated and fairer’.
