Batemans brewery ran dry in record year
Thursday, 1pm: BATEMANS ran dry on Christmas Eve as the Wainfleet brewery notched up record sales in 2009.
Sales soared by five per cent on the previous year with more than 40,000 barrels sold – which means 11.5 million pints were consumed nationwide.
Managing director Stuart Bateman said: "We are at record capacity now and are actually having to consider whether to put in extra fermentation capacity.
"On Christmas Eve we literally didn't have a drop of our own beer in the brewery."
Sales are expected to stay on the upward trend in 2010.
Mr Bateman said the success is attributable to the company's licensees, who are the best they have ever had, along with sales to supermarkets and other breweries.
Batemans has also seen a resurgence of its XB cask-conditioned beer.
The recent award of Pub Company of the Year in the Publican Magazine helped raise the brewery's national profile.
Another award could be in the offing at the National Beer Competition to be held tomorrow, Thursday, in Nottingham, when the brewery's celebrated Victory Ale will be judged alongside more than 60 contenders.
