Bad drivers blamed for traffic safety issues in Spilsby

Careless road users rather than poor highways marking are to blame for traffic safety issues in Spilsby, councillors have said.

Lincolnshire County Council’s investigation into the safety of a pedestrian crossing near The George Hotel revealed it was ‘not in any way dangerous.’

Spilsby Town Council had requested the investigation after a number of complaints about road safety in the area.

Several councillors hoped pedestrian barriers could be installed to improve safety and questioned the investigation’s findings. Coun Phil Odling said: “I’m absolutely adamant that there should be railings there to stop people cutting the corner.”

However the Mayor of Spilsby Coun Michael Lenton agreed with the investigation, claiming there would be no dangers if motorists approached the junction with caution and pedestrians showed more care.

He said: “In practice there’s nothing wrong with the crossing if you approach it properly - it’s just bad driving.”

The quality of driving was also criticised by Coun Julia Pears.

She said: “People are using Spilsby as a rat-run - the driving is atrocious.”
