10% rise in RNLI calls despite poor summer
The Skegness RNLI team were the second busiest in the north of England this summer.
SKEGNESS RNLI was the second busiest lifeboat station in the north of England this summer, the charity has announced.
With this summer being the wettest for a century, most stations across the region were quieter than usual, however call-outs in Skegness were up on last year’s 27 launches with 30 rescues.
Press officer Russ Matthews said: “It actually felt like quite a quiet year so I was rather surprised to see how busy we actually were.
“Skegness is always a busy station, as a popular holiday destination, as soon as the sun comes out we get a flood of people coming to the sea and the beach.
“We had two fairly major call outs this season, one in August when the Poacher all weather lifeboat attended two people in a yacht, who were exhausted trying to get from Lowerstoft to Hull.
“And just a couple of weeks ago we had five people who had broken down in a rigid inflatable off the Norfolk coast.”
Earlier this year the charity was pleased to announce it would be taking delivery of a Shannon class lifeboat in 2016 to assist in its vital work.
Although the funding for that addition to its fleet has been secured, Russ explained that there would be substantial costs training the crews and preparing the boat and station for use.
With all the charity’s funding arising from fund raisers and public donations, he has urged the local public to continue with its invaluable assistance
The annual RNLI charity ball, which last year raised £8,000 for the Skegness crew is scheduled for the coming weeks and is hoped to top that impressive total with an anticipated £10,000.
And on November 19, the Vine Hotel, Skegness, is hosting a sausage and mash evening raising more funds for the charity, with tickets available from the boathouse on 01754 763011.
RNLI divisional inspector, north, Andy Clift said: “As well as the life-saving work carried out by the RNLI lifeboat crews this summer, we should also remember the sterling efforts of our fundraising volunteers. The RNLI depends on them to fund our lifeboat service.”
