10-pin bowling charity event proves a '˜hit'

A charity 10-pin bowling evening in Skegness has been declared a success after '˜racking' up more than £1,500 for cancer care.

The fundraiser was held at Skegness Pier, in Grand Parade, on Friday in support of Macmillan Cancer Support.

It featured 20 teams of five, backed by supporters, battling it out to win a trophy, which was provided by the pier.

A diverse group, they included police staff, accountants, jewellers, gym workers, and hotel workers.

In the end, the winners were Snakes on a Lane, from the Boston Mayflower housing association, with The Ingoldmells Easy Crew from Lincolnshire Police runners-up.

Organiser Shirley Atherton, volunteer chairman of Skegness and District Macmillan Cancer Support, said the event was a lot of fun and the atmosphere “absolutely buzzing”.

“The place was really humming,” she said. “It was fantastic.

“Everybody entered into the spirit and had a fun time.”

The fundraiser also featured a raffle with prizes worth hundreds of pounds, including bottles of perfume from Harrods, Stila make-up, cinema tickets, gym membership, tickets for meals and days out, and a free MoT test.

In all, the event brought in a total of £1,522.32 for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Shirley paid tribute to all those who helped make the event a success.

She said: “I would like to say a huge thank you to everybody who participated with such gusto and an enormous thank you to all the companies and businesses which in hard times supported us by giving us such fabulous prizes, which made the difference between raising an ordinary amount of money and a fantastic amount of money.”

The hope is to make the event an annual occasion.
