An iconic Humpty cuddly toy has been bought by a Lincolnshire photographers with over 150 years of history in Skegness.
The company, now known as Wrates Bagley Scholastic Photographers Ltd bought the 53cm high egg shaped Cuddly toy, based on Humpty Dumpty from the famous nursery ryhme at an auction from Bonhams in Oxford for £6,250.
The toy with a dark green head and checked trousers was made for the BBC children’s Ty programme, Play school and is one of several which appeared on almost every show for more than two decades from the mid 60s.
Managing director of Wrates, Martin Wrate, 45 and business partner Glyn Bagley, 42, thought that the company needed a mascot and after Glynn, who saw the mascot was up for sale, decided to bid for it.
“When I saw the toy up for sale it brought back fond childhood memories from watching it as a young boy, people of our generation grew up with him,” Said Glyn.
“When we’re out and about taking school photographs we thought it would put a smile on the faces of teachers and pupils,” he added.
The toy had a reserve of between £800-£1,200 and Glyn and the company were initially only prepared to go to £3,000 in the bidding.
However, when the bidding started at £3,000 the pair decided to put in their telephone bid regardless.
The toy was sold for a hammer price of £5,000 and with various premiums added, the company paid out £6,250 for the much-loved toy.
Humpty is now the property of Wrates Bagley photographers and will be used by Wrates school photography as a mascot.
The company has offices in Newark and Skegness but was founded in Skegness in 1860 and has been taking school photographs for fifty years.
“The response to Humpty has been amazing, my phone has never stopped ringing with people asking about him and he’s already been asked to appear at various places,” said Glyn.
The Humpty toy will arrive at his new home in Lincolnshire when he is picked up next week and the new owners have promised the Skegness Standard a photo opportunity with the famous toy as soon as he arrives in Skegness.
