This week The Standard takes a look at what has been making the headlines:
Firstly, it was a honour to be in the presence of so many wonderful and deserving people at The Standard Champions awards evening.
Far too often people can shy away from the limelight, but this was the perfect opportunity to honour those unsung heroes of our community.
And there were some truly inspirational stories. So much so we felt compelled to introduce a special recognition award, which was presented to Mark Smith.
Only last year Mark and his family were left devastated when his son Ryan was involved in a cycling accident while not wearing a helmet. Ryan was left with severe head injuries - but despite all of the odds on Father’s Day he took his first steps.
The family are now looking forward to a homecoming to remember.
Mark has been by Ryan’s side constantly during his rehabilitation, while also raising money and awareness for the Ryan Smith Foundation. This aims to help families in similar positions, while also promoting cycle helmet safety.
A truly inspirational and moving story, we are sure you will all agree.
l We now move to this week’s Skegness splash (pardon the pun!) and news of a potential aquarium coming to the town.
The Standard welcomes such a move - what a great attraction this could be for tourists and locals alike.
It will also brighten up a very tired looking section of the seafront currently occupied by the Panda’s Palace building . Some members of the news team can remember spending many an hour in there some time ago, and from the outside not much seems to have changed since then.
l The Standard noted Coun Steve O’Dare’s guest column last week, in which he wrote about a hard-hitting anti-littering campaign.
We commend the council for its stance, but find it highly disappointing that such a campaign is needed in the first place.
Why can’t people just be responsible for their litter and pick up after their dogs?
Surely we all want to live in the cleanest neighbourhood we can and want visitors to enjoy the sights without having to dodge the dog muck?
