Skegness’ teenage table tennis star Tom Jarvis was beaten by the top seed and eventual champion after a fine run to the last 16 of the Junior Boys’ Singles at the French Youth Open.

Jarvis won all three group matches and then two knockout matches – including coming from 2-0 down to beat Japan’s Yukiya Uda 4-2 (8-11, 4-11, 11-8, 11-8, 12-10, 11-8) in the last 32.

That set up a clash against Alexandre Cassin of France in the last 16 and despite taking the first set and later levelling at 2-2, the 15-year-old from Skegness could not extend his run as Cassin sealed a 4-2 victory (11-7, 6-11, 5-11, 12-10, 7-11, 7-11) in front of his home crowd – he later went on to win the competition.

In the doubles, Jarvis and Helshan Weerasinghe reached the last 16, being defeated 2-3 (7-11, 11-9, 4-11, 11-7, 11-13) by Irvin Bertrand & Joe Seyfried of France.

The pair, alongside team-mate Luke Savill, were eliminated in the group stages of the team competition.
