Notices have been spotted in the windows of the Sports Direct branch on Lumley Road, Skegness, suggesting it could be ‘closing down’ with many lines reduced.
But if rumour is to be believed, then the sports chain retailer could be moving to the current Home Bargains unit within the Hildreds Shopping Centre, once that store has moved next door into the former Co-Op supermarket site.
It was announced in April, that the largest empty retail unit in Skegness would be returned to use ‘before summer’ after three months laying dormant.
The Hildreds Centre revealed that Home Bargains, the discount retailers, would be up-scaling from its current unit to the former Co-operative Food Store next door.
Speaking at the time, a spokesperson said: “We are pleased to announce that the Hildreds Shopping Centre has completed a lease agreement with Home Bargains which will be up-sizing from its existing unit and moving into the centre’s former Co-Op store.
“As one of the centre’s existing retailers this is a positive step to fill the large newly vacant unit. It is hoped the new store will open its doors before the summer.”
Home Bargains, however, has since remained tight-lipped about the nature of its move.
The move would leave Home Bargains’ current unit vacant, but could the new tenants be Sports Direct?
No confirmation yet has been offered by the chain or New River Retail regarding the suggestion but statements are set to follow shortly.
