Dedicated knitters in the Skegness area have helped create more than 8,000 little woolly hats this year for Age UK and innocent’s Big Knit campaign.

The hats can be found adorning innocent smoothie bottles on sale now, and for each one sold, innocent donates 25p to Age UK’s Spread the Warmth campaign, helping to fund national and local winter projects.

Now in its 11th year, the Big Knit once again saw budding milliners get behind the campaign. 800,000 hats were knitted in total this year across the UK. Designs include fruit, animals, people or simply traditional bobble hats, which can be found on innocent smoothie bottles in big supermarkets and little shops up and down the country now.

Each winter, one older person dies every seven minutes because of the cold weather. With over a decade of support from knitters up and down the country, The Big Knit has raised vital funds to support local and national winter projects to help older people keep warm and well in winter.

Nicki Lee, community engagement officer at Age UK Lindsey, said: “The Big Knit couldn’t happen without the support of local knitters and we’re extremely grateful to everyone who got involved and knitted hats. The funds raised will go a long way towards supporting local winter projects such as our befriending and winter warmth checks which are vital in helping older people through this difficult time of year.”

Spokesman for innocent drinks Jamie Sterry said: “We want to say a massive thank you to everyone who has got involved in this year’s Big Knit. We’re always gobsmacked by the hats we’re sent in from people all over the UK and the stories we hear from our knitters. All the little woolly hats, from the wild and wonderful to the spotty or stripy, are now adorning innocent smoothie bottles in stores, helping to raise money for Age UK to help older people stay warm in winter.”

It’s not too late to get involved: you can buy a be-hatted smoothie in stores now to help raise vital funds or create your own little virtual hat using the ‘Big Knitter’ at www.thebigknit.co.uk/big-knitter. For every little hat shared on Facebook or Twitter, Age UK will receive 10p from innocent.

There’s also a chance to win a life size version of your little hat. Simply take a picture of you and your woolly hat and share it on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram and tag it with #bigknitmyhat to be in with the chance of winning.
