SKEGNESS will keep its Blue Flag flying high after the beach managed to retain its place on the list of some of best in the world.
The results of the annual Blue Flag and Quality Coast Awards were announced by Keep Britain Tidy yesterday (Tuesday), and six beaches in Lincolnshire made the grade - with Skegness, Mablethorpe, Sutton on Sea and Cleethorpes among them.
Beaches are rewarded for their top-notch facilities, high standard of water quality and also guarantees a litter-free, clean area for visitors.
Councillor Craig Leyland, portfolio holder for the economy at East Lindsey District Council, said: “Blue Flag and Quality Coast status is another important accolade for the coastal resorts of Skegness, Mablethorpe and Sutton on Sea and we’re immensely proud of the area’s success.
“Both awards are about quality and this places our coast as one of the best for cleanliness and a good visitor experience.
“We must continue to build on this success and ensure the East Lindsey coast remains a must visit destination, not just in the summer, but all year around.
“Well done to everyone who has made the excellent achievement possible.”
Beaches at Cleethorpes Marine Embankment and Cleethorpes Humberstone Fitties, also received Keep Britain Tidy’s Quality Coast Award.
This year England achieved nine Blue Flags more than in the previous 12 month period, an achievement which has placed the country inside the world’s top 10 countries for the most Blue Flag beaches.
Almost 50 countries took part in the scheme.
Phil Barton, chief executive of Keep Britain Tidy, which is responsible for the Blue Flag scheme in England and the Quality Coast Awards, said: “We’re absolutely thrilled that England has more Blue Flag beaches this year and we urge more holiday-makers to take advantage of Lincolnshire’s award-winning seaside resorts this summer.
“It’s great to see that more beaches along our coastline have achieved high standards of excellence for visitors. With six beaches in the region receiving Blue Flags and Quality Coast Awards, what better way to holiday in Lincolnshire than to visit one of these local award-winning beaches?
“The continuing high standards of our beaches are testament to the hard work carried out by beach managers throughout the year in order to provide clean and safe beaches for everyone to enjoy, whether you live on the coast or are a visitor.”
There are 142 award-winning beaches in England this year – with 79 Blue Flags and 99 Quality Coast Awards between them. Thirty-six beaches achieved both honours.
