Icelandic hooded seal to remain at Skegness Natureland

A BELOVED hooded seal will remain at a Skegness seal sanctuary after staff found it to be the best option for its current resident.
As reported, Eve as she is commonly known, was recently rejected from returning to a sanctuary in her native Icelandic waters due to the possibility of carrying disease.
Over the past few weeks, owners of Skegness Natureland, Duncan and Richard Yeadon, have been trying to make a decision about what was the best course of action for her.
As reported Eve, is believe to have been born around Greenland or North Eastern Canada and was originally rescued by a seal sanctuary in Germany last August, who then released her from their coast in October.
They fitted a radio tracker to her which showed that she had travelled north all the way to the Shetland Isles.
However, instead of continuing towards Arctic waters she then turned around and came all the way south, where she was found in December at Chapel St Leonards, exhausted and underweight.
Duncan: said “We have consulted other experts in wildlife rescue and animal welfare - including one of the top vets in the country.”
During their research Duncan and Richard discovered that hooded seals not released into an area populated by the same species have a significantly higher chance of re-stranding.
“We heard about one hooded seal that was released off the north of Scotland - which was one idea we had for Eve. A few months later it turned up in Spain - drastically underweight,” said Richard.
Eve is now 16 months old and has spent 11 of those months in captivity, so the decision has been made that it is in Eve’s best interest to remain at Natureland for the time being.
“She seems very chilled out in the Resident Seal Pool, enjoying five meals of the best quality herrings a day,” commented Richard.
“I’m sure we have made the right decision for her.” he added.
