Spilsby music teens visit iconic university

Talented music students from Spilsby have taken in the sights of the world-famous Cambridge University and also several London landmarks during an “experience of a lifetime”.
The year nine and 10 GCSE candidates from King Edward VI Academy combined an overnight stay at Cambridge University with a visit to London’s Covent Garden and St Martin in the Fields.
Kate Walker, subject leader for expressive and performing arts, described it as an exciting trip from start to finish for students Kendall Dempsey, Jordan Smith, Paul Owens, Jessica Gillison, Rhea Cooper and George Merrett.
The group, which also included music teacher Charlotte Burton, travelled to Clare College, Cambridge, where they were shown around and given an introduction to life at the university.
The tour included King’s College and the university’s library with its eight-million books. They also enjoyed Evensong at Clare Chapel.
The following day the group went to Covent Garden and experienced street theatre, buskers and opera.
“Three of our students took part in a Street Theatre performance and felt practically famous after the event,” said Mrs Walker.
A short walk took the group to St Martin in the Fields to experience a lunchtime concert of German Choral Music with pieces from the likes of Handel, Bach and Schuman.
Mrs Walker added: “The two days were an experience of a life time. The conversations on the homeward journey contained many references about aiming for further/higher education.”
