Pupils’ public speaking test
ALFORD and Mablethorpe Rotary Club put the area’s school-chidlren through their public speaaking paces last week.
A total of 53 youngsters from Huttoft, Theddlethorpe, Willoughby and Withern primary schools, together with six from Alford’s John Spendluffe Technical College, were awarded certificates for taking part in the Alford and Mablethorpe Rotary Club’s first ever public speaking competition.
Two from each school were sent forward to the final, which was held at the Meridale Centre in Sutton on Sea on July 3, where they performed to a packed house, including the Mayor of Mablethorpe, Coun Joyce Taylor and many parents and family members.
Each speaker was allotted two minutes.
Abigail King from John Spendluffe was first in the secondary class by talking about the delights of speaking Japanese. She even got audience participation. The runner-up was Megan Evans.
Charlie Newton was first in the primary section speaking about “My pet hamster”, an address which included both historical and evolutionary information. Toby Maddocks came a close second.
Rotary President John Conyers presented prizes to the winners and dictionaries to each of the school stage winners to be used by the school.
The evening was concluded by Mablethorpe Mayor Councillor Taylor, who thanked everyone and congratulated the children who took part on their inspiring efforts.
The competition came about as part of Rotary’s national ‘Youth Speaks’ competition for 11 to 18-year-olds.
And Alford and Mablethorpe Rotary, led by retired head teacher Malcolm White and his wife Anne, decided to take the competition to a new level by completing the first ever public speaking competition for primary schools in our area.
