Published authors helped make literacy week at King Edward VI Academy in Spilsby “a huge success”, say organisers.

The week began with a Speaking And Listening Activities Day (SALAD).

Every lesson covered a range of speaking activities from role play in Maths, to presentations in Geography and debates in Science.

Ms Drewery, whose novels are published by Harper Collins, delivered workshops to Year 9 and Year 8 students. She taught students how to generate ideas from pictures and all were empowered to write their own stories, said Mrs Sneyd.

Year 10 students were wowed by Mr Hussey, who moved to Skegness as a young child and is the author of the Witchfinder trilogy and two supernatural thrillers, published this year.

He began with a thoroughly entertaining talk about his books and the horror genre, before working with students to develop their horror story.

Student, Joseph Losper, said, “The experience was one that I will always remember”.

Teachers at King Edward VI Academy, ended the week with a rolling story for each Key Stage.

Year 7 and 8 were treated to the opening novel of Philip Pullman’s Northern Lights, and Year 9, 10 and 11 were entertained with the opening to, “To Kill a Mockingbird” by Harper Lee.

The chapters had been divided into five parts; five parts for the five lessons. Teachers began each lesson reading the next part.

Assistant Principal, Mrs Mia Sneyd, said: “Learning through talk is a vital skill for all students. Talk helps to clarify and develop thinking, articulate ideas and provides the crucial foundation for learning.”

Mrs Sneyd said: “It is quite easy to lose the magic of an adult reading to students for enjoyment in secondary schools. Adults modelling reading to students has many positive benefits.”

The academy is working hard to raise standards in Literacy and says it will continue to develop the essential skills of reading, writing and talk.
