Dads and granddads were able to spend an enjoyable autumnal afternoon with their young ones thanks to a new initiative launched by Skegness Infant Academy.

The school’s new Dad’s Group led its first excursion to Skegness Eco-Centre to give relatives the chance to spend some quality time with their children in a fun and educational setting.

Head teacher Sue Roy was delighted by the initiative’s uptake which saw more than 60 dads and grandads take part.

She said: “The idea came from our parent support group to enable dads who often don’t have the opportunity to go on school trips, due to work and other commitments, to spend some quality time with their children.

“The response was so fantastic that we decided to put three separate trips on to make sure no one missed out.”

Adults and youngsters took a stroll in the eco-centre’s tranquil surroundings, learning about nature while also enjoying the vibrant autumnal scenes.

They also competed in a fiercely fought den-building tournament and battled it out at the unusual sport of worm-charming by vibrating the soil to lure the wriggly creatures out of their underground habitat up to the surface.

Feedback from those participating in the event was resoundingly positive with many writing to the school to express their thanks.

One dad said it was a ‘fantastic afternoon’ another expressed his thanks for a ‘fun and educational day out’ and others said it was ‘great to spend the afternoon having fun with their children.’

Encouraged by the event’s success, Mrs Roy said there would definitely be more Dad Group excursions to come and has thanked Skegness Eco-Centre for its support.

“We would like to say a big thankyou to (centre manager) Paul Charles for supporting us and helping us to make sure it was a fantastic time for all the dads and the children.”
