Travellers ‘don’t cause crime’
TRAVELLER encampments visiting Skegness do not create an increase in crime, Lincolnshire Police has claimed.
Sergeant Andrew Hickingbottom made the statement to Skegness Town Council at its latest meeting on Wednesday
Coun Phil Kemp had asked what the force’s policy regarding travellers was, as he felt the general public perception was that they ‘break the law without fear of consequence in the form of arrest or fine.”
Sergeant Hickingbottom said the strategy was the same as for any other criminal allegation and that there was nothing to suggest travellers caused any more crime than other people.
“It may be a perception but there’s not much I can do about that,” he said. “The majority of families come to Skegness two or three times a year and don’t cause any problems.”
