A BURGLAR who wasted thousands of pounds when he failed to attend his trial at Lincoln Crown Court has been jailed for 15 months.
Damion Hallam, 25, was caught with a screwdriver after leaving an office attached to a couple’s home in Church Lane, Winthorpe.
Lincoln Crown Court heard police woke the couple after discovering Hallam nearby with two bags of property taken during the 2am burglary.
The stolen property included a camera, camcorder and golf range finder. A second man escaped detection after being seen “wheeling” away a bike from the couple’s home.
Hallam’s case was listed for trial after he denied any involvement in the burglary - claiming a friend had left him with the bags after a night out drinking in Skegness.
When Hallam failed to attend court a warrant was issued for his arrest and he later admitted his role in the burglary.
In mitigation the court was told Hallam did not enter the couple’s living area. Hallam, formerly from Nottingham, but now of no fixed address, pleaded guilty to the burglary and a bail offence.
Passing sentence Judge Sean Morris told him: “Have you the remotest idea how much money you have cost?
“Witnesses had to leave their work and come to this building when you were deliberately staying away.”
