Skegness pub licence suspended following drug taking
A Skegness pub will be unable to trade during the busy festive season after its licence was suspended following repeated evidence of drug taking discovered by police.
East Lindsey District Council has suspended the Lincolnshire Nailer’s premises licence until January 31 following a review held on Wednesday,
The council’s licensing sub-committee has also removed the designated premises supervisor Simon Harrison but decided against full licence revocation after police and the licence holder agreed a number of steps prior to the meeting to prevent further drug taking.
Principal licensing officer Adrian Twiddy said: “In this instance, having heard evidence from the premises licence holder and Lincolnshire police of the agreed steps to put in place in order to prevent drugs misuse, the sub-committee decided on suspension of the licence rather than revocation and the addition of licence conditions.”
Agreed steps include the adoption of a police approved drugs policy, drug awareness staff training and the installation of a prominently displayed sign stating that the pub has breached licensing objectives.
The licence review was carried out following an application by Lincolnshire Police which had gathered evidence of repeated drug taking during a series of visits, which led to the arrest of a member of bar staff for drug possession on September 28.
A police report also accused the premises supervisor and staff of failing to make ‘determined efforts to address the matter.’
Mr Harrison has objected to this accusation, claiming he had done everything he could, including installing a seven camera CCTV system, displaying signs and treating surfaces in the toilets to prevent drug taking.
He said: “I could not have done anything more than I did.
“We had no help or support from the police or council - if we had been one of the bigger chains I think that would have been very different and could have resulted in a different outcome.”
