Shoplifter is jailed

A persistent shoplifter has been sent to prison for five months after being caught stealing, just days after receiving a suspended prison sentence for the same thing.

John Thomas Parkin, 45, of Barnes Crescent, Skegness, admitted stealing £8 worth of food from the Spar on December 5 and a bottle of wine worth £5.99 from Churchill Service Station on November 27.

The magistrates heard that Parkin had been subject to an 18 week custody order suspended for 12 months on November 15, 2012 and that the first of the new offences was just 12 days later.

In mitigation Nicholas Alderson said Parkin had a ‘very extensive’ record of offending, much of which involved alcohol.

He said he was suffering from cirrhosis of the liver and had been receiving help from the alcohol dependency team since November.

The magistrates activated the 18 week prison sentence and added an additional four weeks custody for the new offences, to run consecutively, making a total of 22 weeks.
