Man spared prison in Butlins phone theft

A MAN who stole a mobile phone during a chalet burglary at Butlins has been spared jailed by a judge.

Ricky Smith, 23, took the phone which belonged to a cleaner after reaching in through a window while he slept.

Lincoln Crown Court heard an accomplice opened the window while Smith put his hand into the chalet.

Phil Howes, prosecuting, said the owner of the phone was woken by the burglary and gave chase.

Smith, from Keighley in West Yorkshire, was eventually found hiding in another chalet on the Ingoldmells site.

David Eager, mitigating, told the court Smith had been exploited by his accomplice who was a more “sophisticated criminal” with previous burglary convictions.

Smith, of Elwood Road, Keighley, pleaded guilty to the burglary which occured on 30 December, last year.

He was sentenced to a 12 month community order and told to complete 180 hours of unpaid work in the community.

Passing sentence Judge Michael Heath told him: “The occupier of the chalet was awoken and gave chase.”
