Man in £700 games theft
A man who stole more than £700 worth of computer games from a Skegness supermarket told police he did so to settle a debt and had never received anything for them, a court has heard.
Tony Keith Benton, 32, of Alexandra Road, Skegness, admitted stealing £735 worth of games from Tesco in Richmond Drive on October 29 when he appeared at Skegness Magistrates’ Court last week.
Prosecuting, Nick Todd said Benton was seen on CCTV taking the games but was not detained at the time.
The next day he was seen by one of the store’s security staff in the town centre. Police were informed and he was arrested.
He told the police that after he took the games he handed them over to a man outside the store in settlement of a debt.
Representing himself, Benton told the magistrates he had been ‘forced into it by some people’. “I got myself into a situation and I couldn’t see any other way out of it,” he said.
Benton was fined £110 and ordered to pay a £20 victim surcharge and compensation of £735.
