Fine for using found card
A man who used a bank card he had found to top up his mobile phone, admitted theft and fraud charges at Skegness Magistrates’ Court last week.
Sean Richard Humble, 33, of Lincoln Road, Skegness was said to have found the card at Joe’s Beach Bar on August 12, after the handbag in which it had been kept, was stolen the previous night.
Humble, who had also been at the bar the night before, went to the bar in the morning to collect some of his property which he had left behind and saw the card on the floor by the bar.
Instead of handing it in, he used the card to top up the credit on his mobile phone by £20.
Mitigating, Gary Farmer said it was Humble’s first court appearance and he was embarrassed to be there.
Mr Farmer said Humble had lost his job in July and was living on his partner’s income as he did not believe in claiming state benefits.
The magistrates told Humble that he could have handed it in. “You chose to keep the card and you chose to use it,” they said.
Humble was fined £80 and ordered to pay £20 in compensation, £85 in court costs and a £15 victim surcharge.
