Father of bride in car vandalism at wedding

A wedding turned sour when the father of the bride kicked a car parked outside the venue and caused £1,000 worth of damage, Skegness Magistrates’ Court has heard.

Mark Elvin, 42, of Richmond Drive, Skegness, admitted damaging a Ford Fiesta in Skegness on July 17, when he appeared in court last week.

Paul Wood, prosecuting, said Elvin was at his daughter’s wedding when there was a dispute, during which he was restrained by other guests and taken outside to calm down.

As he was being walked up the street, he kicked out at a car which was parked there, damaging two panels. The owner of the car had no connection with the wedding party.

Elvin told the police he was intoxicated and could not remember doing it.

Mitigating for Elvin, Dave Clapham said he took out his frustration by kicking out at the car.

“He had been trying to calm things down before he was ushered out,” he told the court. “He can’t put forward any positive defence and accepts responsibility for it.”

The magistrates told Elvin it was a ‘miserable’ affair for the owner of the car, who had nothing to do with the party.

They conditionally discharged Elvin for 12 months and ordered he pay £1,186 in compensation.
