He has defied medical opinion more than once and now Ryan Smith has taken the latest steps on his extraordinary path to recovery.
The Chapel St Leonards teenager walked for the first time on Sunday since suffering severe brain injuries in a cycling accident last year. Ryan, 17, took tentative steps at the Children’s Trust Centre in Surrey where he is undergoing intensive rehabilitation. With the help of dad Mark and therapists at the centre he was able to move across the hydrotherapy pool.
Mark said: “One of the buoyancy aids slipped so Ryan just started to walk. I was elated and inspired - it was the best Father’s Day present a dad could ever get. Ryan has a long way to go to overcome his demons and battles, but his progress has been miraculous.
“We were told after the accident that he wouldn’t live, then that he could not do anything but breathe, to achieve what he has is extraordinary.”
Ryan has been treated at the centre for the last six months and is due to return home to Chapel in August.
