A major road has been closed since Monday and won’t reopen until Friday causing chaos for commuters in the community.

The A52 has been closed for highway works since Monday and was thought to be reopening today (Wednesday) between Addlethorpe and Chapel St Leonards to allow for repairs to the road surface.

A spokesperson for Lincolnshire County Council has confirmed that repairs are needed in the middle of the road and a full road closure is necessary.

“This is because the minimum safe working distance we require on this road is 1.2m, which doesn’t leave enough room for HGVs and buses. However, by fully closing the road this means we can complete the works quicker,” they said.

“We have scheduled these surface improvements outside of the school holidays to minimise disruption to motorists,” they added.

But a Chapel St Leonards mother feared it would be chaos as it would cut off major towns and be a struggle for her daughter to travel to sixth form.

Another resident reliant on public transport wonders why the work can’t be ‘done at night’ and another using the road to deliver food thinks it’s a ‘disgrace’ to local people and the authorities ‘don’t care’.

Bus operator Stagecoach East Midlands made arrangements for a limited number of scheduled buses to pass through the site.

Dave Skepper, commercial director for Stagecoach East Midlands, said it allowed the company to operate a ‘much reduced bus service’ to and from Chapel St Leonards for Monday and Tuesday.

“No vehicles other than buses will be allowed through the works,” he said.

“We cannot run buses via the diversionary route on the narrow back roads because the substantial increase of traffic, which may include other large vehicles, will make it difficult to negotiate along certain stretches.”

Some buses have been able to flow through the closure but a full closure is in operation today (Wednesday).
