A memorial to a relatively unknown Antarctic explorer from Skegness has been blessed in a civic reception in the resort.

Jess Handsley served with Captain Scott on his Discovery expedition and a memorial was unveiled in Compass Gardens last month by Mayor Coun Carl Macey on behalf of Skegness Town Council and the Civic Society who funded it.

Neither time or distance can erode the memory of this brave young man

On Sunday, the memorial was blessed in a civic dedication to Skegness’ forgotten son in the centenary of his death. It was attended by Jane Handsley, who has strong ancestral connections to the area and pushed for the memorial along with local historian Angela Gooch,

The blessing was conducted by the Rev Ian Banks, who told the crowd that gathered: “Neither time or distance can erode the memory of this brave young man.”
