A mobility scooter firm from Skegness has won the lucrative support of an entrepreneurial ‘dragon’ who was impressed by its owners’ ‘passion and energy’.

Staff at People First Mobility were over the moon when Dragons’ Den star Theo Paphitis selected the firm as a winner in his weekly Small Business Sunday competition on Twitter.

The success has given People First prestigious coverage on Mr Paphitis’ website and earned it 200 new Twitter followers in less than a week - with exciting new business opportunities developing already.

Business co-owner Karen Sheppard said: “This is a great achievement for our business and shows what hard work and dedication can achieve.

“It is fantastic to have support from a great entrepreneur such as Theo.

“Being an established business in such a harsh economic climate was always going to be tough, but Theo has recognised our hard work and helped spread the word about what we do to his Twitter following.”

The Dragons’ Den star and founder of stationary supply chain Ryman launched the competition in October 2010 to give small businesses exposure and support.

Each Sunday he selects six of his favourite businesses to have tweeted him with the hashtag #SBS and rewards them with a re-tweet and a mention on his website.

He said: “I admire people who have passion and energy - if you cannot bore your friends to death about your own small business then something is seriously wrong.

“My vision is that everyone who has ever won an #SBS re-tweet from me becomes part of a friendly club of like-minded individuals who can share successes and learnings.”

People First Mobility was founded by Karen and her husband Chris in 2003 and has three local stores on Lumley Square and Burgh Road trading estate in Skegness and Ingoldmells High Street.

The family firm prides itself on offering ‘good honest care and advice’ to its customers and hopes its success with #SBS will open new avenues of opportunity.
