THE massively successful Skegness beach race is back this weekend.
Last year’s inaugural weekend of races were a huge success and pulled in over 14,000 spectators.
That phenomenal crowd guaranteed the return of the competition, and organisers hope to make it an annual fixture on the town calendar.
This year’s races are taking place a month earlier this time round, but other than that the format is still very much the same - with some of the best motocross riders on the planet battling it out in spectacular fashion.
The Amateur Motorcyle Association (AMCA) is once again running the event and it is expecting another fantastic series of races.
“Beach racing guru Rob Meek, along with Rich Rose, will yet again be designing a tough yet enjoyable track with some challenging sections,” said a spokesperson.
“With extra beach being used, the lap time is looking to be increased also, providing even more entertainment for both the riders and the spectators.
“Spectating is still completely free of charge, so don’t miss out,” they added.
The event will be held this Saturday and Sunday, November 12 and 13 and will feature a whole host of different motorcycle classes.
Kids, youth and quads and sidecar races will take place on the Saturday, with a three-hour adult solo race running on the Sunday.
The quad race has been extended to two hours due to so many of the riders enjoying last year’s session.
With prizes for the riders rising up to £1,000, the races are sure to draw in the cream of motocross talent. Last year’s champion Milko Potisek is confirmed to return to defend his crown, and four-time World Enduro Champion, Paul Edmondson, will also be back to challenge him for the crown.
Other notable racers this year include 2011 2nd Dutch Champion, Ben Watson, in the kids class, 2011 BYMX Champion Nathan Watson in the youths, and David Vass in the quads.
In the adults class are this year’s MZ1 British Champion Brad Anderson, multi Weston winner Rob Meek, and MX2 British Championship contender Matt Moffat.
The leader of East Lindsey District Council is delighted the racing is back in Skegness and believes it will be a huge boost to local businesses.
Coun Doreen Stephenson said: “We’’re delighted that AMCA motorcycle racing will again take place on Skegness’ Central Beach.
“We’ve worked closely with AMCA in the past year to ensure the 2011 event is even more successful than 2010 when thousands of people came to watch at what would have otherwise been a quiet weekend.
“We need to encourage more event organisers to come to our district outside the main holiday season as events such as this gives the local economy a real boost.”
