Lincolnshire gritters out in force for heavy snow
Lincolnshire County Council’s full fleet of 43 gritters are out and about treating almost 1,900 miles of priority routes as the area braces itself for heavy snowfall sometime over the next 24 to 36 hours.
The council also claims to have almost 24,000 tonnes of salt in its stockpile to help it cope with what some have called ‘the Beast from the East’.
But although the fleet will be working to keep routes clear the council has warned motorists to take care when driving.
“Our full fleet of 43 high-tech gritters will be regularly treating 1,869 miles of priority routes around the clock, which include all A and B roads in the county.
“Despite this, it can never be guaranteed that roads will be completely clear of ice, and motorists should take extreme care on routes whether they have been treated or not. Grit should be seen as a huge help, but not a complete cure.
“We have to prioritise salting the roads, and footways will be slippery. We won’t be able to respond to specific requests for footways to be gritted although we do treat some priority footways.
“Don’t forget that people can take a common sense approach to clearing snow or ice from their property or street, and we encourage communities to work with us in keeping roads and pavements safe during the winter months.
“We currently have 23,600 tonnes of salt in stock, and a further 5,000 tonnes will be arriving in the near future. (This will be delivered in two parts of 3,000 and 2,000 tonnes respectively.)
“To put these figures in context, during the especially bad winter of 2009/10 we used 34,000 tonnes in total from October to March.
