A family-run hotel in Skegness has reaped the rewards of 14 years’ hard work after receiving glowing coverage in a prestigious trade magazine.

Keith and Linda Poyser of the Sunningdale Hotel were featured in a four-page spread for Visit England’s summer edition of its Quality Edge publication.

The couple believe their years of hard work and embracing approach towards new marketing techniques made them a prime candidate for the feature’s focus on ‘up and coming’ establishments.

“We were really, really pleased with it and so happy that we were chosen out of all the guest houses in the town,” said Linda.

“They wanted to feature a guest house that was up and coming and chose us because we’ve been gradually refurbishing all of the rooms and revamping the hotel year after year - it’s a great reward for all our hard work.”

In recent years, the Sunningdale has expanded its marketing approach by gaining Visit England’s three star accreditation and utilising online sites such laterooms.com, which Linda says has doubled bookings.

“We thought it was mainly for larger places like London but when we realised Skegness was on it, we got involved and saw our bookings double,” she said.

“You don’t have to be accredited to be on these sites but people are becoming more and more aware of the star rating, which has also helped.”

After embracing the new approach, the couple say business has never been so good.

“We love Skegness and the last few years have been our best thanks to the internet,” said Linda.

“This year has been even better than the last two, the weather has helped, but we’ve been generally doing better all round.”

East Lindsey District Council has applauded the couple for gaining such prestigious publicity, which the authority hopes will be a boost for them and the area.

“It’s great to see a local business highlighted for the quality of its offer in a national publication,” said the portfolio holder for the economy Coun Craig Leyland,

“It is so important that when people visit an area the offer is strong and both Mr and Mrs Poyser clearly work very hard to maintain excellent standard.

“I hope the Sunningdale Hotel continues to go from strength to strength.”

After 14 years in the business, the Poysers are finding life in the hospitality trade more rewarding than ever.

“We like to please our guests and it’s so enjoyable meeting people from all different walks of life,” said Linda.
