Skegness Acadamy's year nine football team had the chance to test out the school's brand new multi-use games area last week.

Sporty Skegness Academy students have celebrated the completion of phase two in the school’s bold expansion plans, which has brought them a new multi-use games area.

The academy’s year nine football team took the opportunity to test out the impressive new facility on Friday, which forms part of a £22 million project initiated in May 2011.

Acting principal Ian Corns said: “It is great to see work progressing and the completion of more of our greatly improved facilities.

“The construction programme has been carefully phased to ensure minimum disruption to students but I would like to thank students and staff for their flexibility.”

The multi-use games area and long jump pit are now available for pupils to enjoy as part of their sports education, which form ‘a big part of academy life.’

The school’s enhanced focus on sport since it was taken over by the Greenwood Dale Foundation Trust two years back has seen it selected as a finalist for the State School of the Year category at the prestigious Aviva and Daily Telegraph School Sport Matters Awards.

Other facilities completed in phase two of the project include state-of-the-art food technology, art, ICT and general teaching areas.

Construction firm Balfour Beatty has also overseen the gradual demolition of old buildings and the refurbishment of others which are to be retained.

Senior project manager Rob Bradley said: “It is a privilege for our teams to be able to deliver a high quality facility on time and on budget.

“This is a testament to the extremely close relationship between Balfour Beatty, Lincolnshire County Council, Skegness Academy and the Greenwood Dale Foundation Trust to ensure that a holistic solution is provided to deliver high quality education to the community within Skegness,” he added.

The third and final phase of the construction project has now begun and is currently on track for completion before the end of summer in 2013.
