Alford has collected a number of honours in this year’s East Midlands in Bloom competition.
The annual event aims to encourage the improvement of areas through the imaginative use of trees, shrubs, flowers and landscaping.
This year, Alford received a silver award in the small town category.
It also took a judges award for the Battle of the Somme Memorial display at St Wilfrid’s Church.
There was a silver award for The Willow Restaurant and Tea Rooms in the best retail/commercial premises category. There were silver gilt awards for The Anchor Inn in the best pub/hotel garden or display category, and for the garden of Mrs O’Donnell, in Robinson Avenue, in the Frank Constable MBE Award for best residential garden.
Alford and District Horticultural Society entered the competition on behalf of Alford. President Brian Belcher thanked all those who supported its effort, but said the town fell short of what it could have achieved. He said: “We should have got gold, we should have done better.”
