THE Royal British Legion’s Alford branch raised over £4,400 from the annual poppy appeal, with funds still coming in.
The news was announced at the branch’s annual luncheon at the Waggon & Horses South Reston last week.
Branch secretary John Johnson said the fundraising was not yet officially closed and that it stood at £4,404.31. He thanked all those who had made such a superb total possible.
He also thanked Mr Stuart Reder who looks after the garden around the war memorial outside St Wilfrid’s Church.
He then asked county vice chairman Bridget Wilcox to present awards of achievement to two Poppy collectors who were present. These were 30 year achievement for collecting which went to Mrs Nancy Wilson of Thurlby near Alford and Mr Carl Short of Alford.
She told everyone that the amount raised for Lincolnshire has topped £767,000 and that the total was due to the hard work of collectors and the people in Lincolnshire.
Branch chairman Alan Jenkinson gave a vote of thanks to Bridget for joining the luncheon, and Mrs Pat Marsh presented Bridget with a “Jubilee Rose” bush.
The branch meets once a month on a Tuesday lunchtime at Alford Conservative Club. Call Eric Danby on 01507 462408 for more information.
