Friday, 2.34pm - THE festivities planned for this year's switch-on will be better than ever thanks to the SO 2009 festival.

That's the prediction of East Lindsey District Council which has secured Arts Council funding - estimated at £270,000 - to make the event a real blockbuster.

"I am really excited," enthuses communications officer James Gilbert. "We've pulled out all the stops to set up a fantastic show for residents and visitors alike."

The traditional countdown to the fireworks remains, but this year it will take place on the beach , with Lincs FM radio presenter Eddie Shaw acting as compere.

There will also be a lavish fireworks show - entitled Full Circle - featuring live music and special effects.

For those who want to revel after the fireworks, it will be an all-night affair because the illuminations will stay on until 4am.

Mr Gilbert added: "There will be plenty of time after the spectacular fireshow on the beach to have a wander in Skegness, take in a drink, catch a late-night bite, and generally enjoy yourselves."

The same day will also feature an opera gala night, starring Jonathan Ansell, Jonathan Kerrigan and the sinfonia, ViVA, with favourites from Puccini, Donizetti, Tchaikovsky and Bizet. The event is being held at the Embassy, with tickets priced at £15.

The festival will also include comedy routines, singing and children's events in the Clock Tower all weekend.

The SO event is also part of the London 2012 Open Weekend which is a national run up to the Olympics.
