THursday, 5.21pm - SKEGNESS students have helped smash the Guinness world record for skipping - unofficially at least.
It is believed the previous record of 19,000 people has been smashed with 49,000 people taking part, including students from 17 schools in the area.

Schools from the Lincolnshire Coastal School Sports Partnership took part in the exciting event with the Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent partnerships as part of National Schools' Sports Week.

Skegness Grammar School, the only secondary school to take part, was joined by primary schools in Withern, Spilsby, Huttoft, Chapel St Leonards, Willoughby, Ingoldmells, Partney and Great Steeping.

Nigel Roylance, director of specialisms at the grammar school, said: "The staff and pupils of the school are to be congratulated in the way they embraced the spirit of the whole event and played their part in achieving a new world record.

"The event had its serious side in highlighting the issues associated with a healthy lifestyle and in the process we were able to raise money for the British Heart Foundation."

Students paid not to wear uniform with all proceeds going to the BHF.

The event organised at Skegness Grammar School by Nicola Blankley, head of girls' sports, took place on the school field and was adjudicated by Standard editor Rebekah Gunn and PCSO Katie Taylor.

Partnership development manger Pauline Yemm said: "It was great. It was quite nice and we had some good comments from the schools that it was a good team-building exercise."

The Guinness Book of Records is expected to confirm the record later in the summer.
