Thursday, 10.27am - A GLITTERING night of achievement was enjoyed by all at the eighth Skegness Standard Champions Awards, last night, Wednesday.
Twenty-two nominees and their guests were invited to the beautiful bash at Butlins, where they were treated to a drinks reception in the Spa, followed by a wonderful buffet at The Yacht Club.

There were eight winners on the night who all received a bottle of bubbly, a glass plaque and a certificate from special guest BBC Radio Lincolnshire's Judy Theobald.

The runner-ups were presented with certificates by Chris Ward from power company Centrica which sponsored the evening.

The evening was hosted by Standard editor Rebekah Gunn and entertainment was provided by Fantasy Island, with a fantastic High School Musical-themed cheerleading and singing routine, as well as magician Darren Kidby.

The overall achiever of the evening, picked from all of the winners by a special judging panel, was Joel Grunnill, 84, of Skegness.

Mr Grunnill, who won the senior achiever award for his 81-year dedication to Skegness Lifeboat, was selected because 'his unstinting and unending support for a vital volunteer service in Skegness marked him out from the other exceptional winners.'

Mr Grunnill, who was awarded an MBE for his lifeboat service last year, said: "It's very nice. You just don't expect these things. It's all such a surprise.

"I've had a very nice evening. We were well looked after. The staff were so organised and the food was exceptional."

Miss Gunn said: "It has been a wonderful evening and all our winners and runners-up were truly inspirational.

"We had over 3,000 votes showing how much the community supports these people and their achievements.

"We are proud to be able to acknowledge their efforts so publicly."

All of the nominees were chosen by members of the public and readers were asked to vote for their favourites during a four-week period. There was an incredible response.

Catherine Booth, who won top teacher, said: "It's been absolutely amazing. I thought it was great just to be nominated, but winning was just, 'wow'.

"Thank you to everyone who voted."

Steve Andrews, who won the customer care award on behalf of the Hildreds centre staff, said: "It's been absolutely fantastic. Of course it's not just me, it's for the work of the whole team who will be thrilled."

And carer winner Mandy Hayes, of Skegness Day Centre, said: "It's amazing so many people voted and think I do a worthwhile job. This evening has beeen absolutely wonderful.
