Monday, 4.53pm - MAIL workers in Skegness went on strike this morning, Monday, over working conditions and job safety fears.
Walkouts have been arranged by the Communications Workers' Union all over the country over what it regards as Royal Mail's attack on members' rights and conditions.
All 51 staff at Skegness delivery office took part in the strike for 24 hours from 3am, and picketed at the office in Berry Way from 5-9am.
Local union representative Mick Conway said staff were upset about the way Royal Mail wants to change its working system which could see workers covering other people's shifts without extra money.
It also means postal workers must complete their allocated hours rather than finishing when their work is done, as has been common practice.
There has also been talk of downsizing, which Mr Conway said could affect five jobs in Skegness.
A national walkout could take place at the end of September.
A Royal Mail spokesman said: "We cannot understand why the union is claiming to support modernisation when it's pursuing a policy of actively opposing the changes we need to make to ensure there's a successul future for the business, its people and its customers. Any changes we are making are fully in line with the existing agreement on modernisation.
"We continue to urge the CWU not to go ahead with its planned national ballot and having met the union already more than 50 times in recent months, our door remains firmly open for more talks."
