Tuesday, 2.34pm - IT is hoped Skegness will have a foreshore to be proud of within a year as a new cleaning and maintenance regime is set to be introduced.
East Lindsey District Council has received a barrage of complaints this summer about the state of the foreshore, with its filthy waterway and boating lake, and vandalised Fairy Dell.

But ELDC's street scene business manager Roy Ormsby is keen to change all that.

He organised a walkabout with district councillors to identify the main 'grot spots' and to suggest how the council can improve its service.

He said: "At the end of the day we are the last line of defence. We pick up what everybody drops.

"It costs us a couple of million pounds to do, which is taxpayers' money - so we are spending their money on the litter they drop.

"The message we want to get across is for people, visitors and businesses to take more responsibilty as well."

Mr Ormsby explained the upkeep of the foreshore is done on an 'ad-hoc' basis, and is carried out by different council teams.

He felt the lack of clearly defined standards was another flaw as there was no barometer for how things should be done.

He hopes to create a clearly defined plan and standards which balance the council's resources and providing a good service.

ELDC also plans to encourage businesses to get involved with keeping the town neat by introducing business awards.
