Thursday, 4.45pm - HELP is needed for Skegness Silver Band to provide its new members with instruments.
The band, which is celebrating its centenary along with town mascot the Jolly Fisherman, has been enjoying a membership high, as people, especially youngsters, are clamouring to join.

But it has meant the band, which is non-profit making, cannot afford to provide enough instruments, meaning some youngsters are having to wait.

Secretary Mandy Roberts said: "We've put a lot of effort in over the last six months because we've been through some lean times, but now we have players coming out of the woodwork who want to play and learn.

"We've had nine join in a week. Its quite something to have so many at once, but we are actually running out of instruments and children are having to wait to join.

"We were thinking people might have old instruments they might be willing to donate for the children to play on."

There are at least five children waiting to join the band as soon as instruments become available, as well as many interested children from local primary schools who have expressed an interest in joining.

The band charges £1 a week which covers tuition, instruments and the uniform.

Mrs Roberts said: "Apparently a revival is on its way and the kids think its the new cool thing to do. We don't want to be turning them away because the future could be even brighter."

* If you can help the band by donating instruments or money to buy instruments, contact Mrs Roberts, tel 01507 462658.
