Wednesday, 12.10pm - A COMMUNITY centre with doctor and dental facilities could be created in Winthorpe within five years.
But the plan is already under threat because the residents' association, which is behind the project, could soon fold if more volunteers do not come forward.

Association chairman Jackie Ward revealed the plans at the group's AGM last Tuesday.

She said: "We're hoping to do a purpose-built community centre with full-time paid staff.

"We're hoping for a doctor and dental surgery – we've spoken to these people and they are really interested in providing it if we can get the building. We'd also like to get the Citizens' Advice Bureau involved.

"It will hopefully take no more than five years, but we need volunteers to fundraise because it will cost in the region of £500,000."

The centre would be a hub for the community, with many agencies using it to offer information and advice. It would also provide a meeting place for local groups and the youth club.

She explained a possible site was on the play park off Church Lane, and partners would include police, the district, county and town councils, SureStart, and New Linx Housing Trust.

But Mrs Ward warned more help was needed because the regular small group of volunteers cannot cope with it alone.

She said: "We've got disheartened. We've raised over £500,000 between four of us (since the group started in 2002]. All people do is come here and complain but they don't want to get involved.

"If over the next year we don't get more volunteers and (Seathorne] hall rented out, I can see us folding."

The association is very busy providing youth activities throughout the week, as well as free internet access every Tuesday and regular coffee mornings.

But the hall, owned by the Methodist Church, needs to be used by other groups to make it viable, or else it could be lost.
